Over the Christmas holiday Donald Trump decided to fire the remaining 16 members of the Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS to the President, members were notified by a letter via FedEx without explanation. Gabriel Maldonado told NSNBC's Rachel Maddow on Tuesday he had no idea that he was going to be terminated.
The Members were terminated this past Wednesday, and a majority of the members still had time remaining on their terms. In June 2017 six members resigned in protest that Trump's administration showed a complete lack of action with regards to HIV/AIDS. There is speculation that the firing was fueled by retribution for the several members leaving last year. Maldonado told Maddow on the Rachel Maddow Show "My HIV doesn't have a term limit," furthermore, he stated that "It doesn't expire or leave when a new administration comes... to put political ideology or partisanship at the forefront in the decision-making is not only damaging to the work that we have done but it's also stagnating for advancing the lives and health outcomes of those of us living with HIV and the communities hardest impacted."
