It appears that straight YouTuber has since apologized after posting an image of him sitting on an AIDS memorial during pride. Aflie Deyes who has millions of followers and in a public relationship with Zoella, another YouTuber.
It seems that he stopped to pose for what would be an unremarkable photo, so he hopped unto the base of a statue, looking into the heavens and waving his flag. There is just one problem – the Instagram image was set on the Brighton AIDS memorial.
One person wrote: “Unless I’m mistaken, that’s the f*cking Aids memorial statue. That’s where we gathered as a community after pulse to mourn the lost, where we meet every year for world aids day. It’s not a perch, it’s where we leave candles and messages.”
Mr. Deyes immediately took down the photo and issued an apology.
“Just seen a tweet saying that in the picture I tweeted of myself celebrating Brighton Pride, I was sitting on the edge of an Aids Memorial.
For sure didn’t realize that and didn’t mean to offend anyone if the picture did. I’ve deleted it! Thanks for letting me know.”
However, it didn’t end there.
He was back on Twitter wondering why people haven’t moved on:
“I’ll never understand why people always think the worst.
The replies I’m getting about sitting on the memorial. I didn’t even know it was a memorial and yet people are tweeting saying I don’t care about aids.
Spend your time educating others, rather than just instantly attacking.”
Some have suggested that maybe a donation to a local AIDS charity or maybe volunteer with an LGBT outreach organization.
But this is where we’re going to stray. I can understand the emotional feelings people have about the memorial, however, if it was an honest mistake and he apologized then where are the issues? I mean when did this become a crime? So, to show his loyalty to the LGBT community he must make a donation, is that how we apologize in the LGBT community, give us money and we’re cool? I would suggest that maybe some accept a heartfelt apology instead of trying to extort money from someone.
