ALEX LANDI OPENS UP ABOUT STEREOTYPES AND PLAYING A GAY ASIAN ON PRIME TIME

​ABC’s hit show Grey’s Anatomy will feature its first gay male surgeon, Dr. Nico Kim, portrayed by actor Alex Landi.

A recent interview with Travis Mills on Beats I at Apple Music, Landi who is straight stresses the importance of gay Asian character, especially on prime-time networks.

“I’m just glad that I can give everyone a voice,” Landi says. “Asians are represented, I think, by less than 3 percent in entertainment, LGBTQ being less than 1 percent, so for them to combine both of those categories into one role is super special, and I’m so happy that I can take that on.”

Asked about the challenges of playing a gay character, Landi says he doesn’t want to mess anything up or offend anyone.

“I just hope I do it right,” he says. “I just hope the way I do it is accepted by everyone.”

Furthermore, he states: “I want to take these two categories and make everyone look strong. I want to get rid of that stereotype and give them a different look on the LGBTQ community. I just hope I’m making everyone proud.”

Currently, the 15th season of Grey Anatomy is on holiday hiatus but will return on ABC in January.
